While we surely have plenty of reasons to own up our sleeve, we know renting can be both practical and sensible given the circumstances. While some rent while exploring a new city to feel out a given area, others appreciate the hassle-free benefits of not owning a residence. Whatever the reason may be, renting is a viable option for many. However, it can influence the way you accentuate your home, especially if you’re uncertain about the longevity of your stay. We’re sharing our favorite decorating hacks to fill your rented space with a complementary personality and sense of home, many of which are applicable to owners, too.
Think versatile.
The key to decorating any rental is accumulating functional pieces. If you’ve been renting for a while or are unsure of your next move, it’s important to seek pieces with diverse purposes. We suggest not buying furniture or decor that solely accommodates the existing space - consider how it could be used in other instances or rooms once you’re out of a temporary rental. Multi-use accent tables and chairs, dining furniture, bookshelves, etc. should all be versatile in how you can use them now and later.
Refresh the lighting.
While it can be tricky to replace fixtures with complex electricals, updating shades or bulbs is an approachable way to perk up your space. Similarly, be sure to incorporate your own personal flair with use of table and floor lamps that will both brighten and style up your space.
Give your windows some attention.
More likely than not, your rental either lacks window coverings altogether or they’re outdated. Regardless, updating to fresh curtains or simple shades will make a huge difference in your space. If your natural lighting is limited, opt for a sheer curtain to create an airy feel. Or, if you’re looking to add a splash of color or texture, consider a vibrant pattern to make a fun statement.

While you’ll want to consider the longevity of your stay, repainting your space or incorporating a statement wall with peel-and-stick wallpaper can really work to revitalize your space to make it feel more like home. Plus, many landlords appreciate a fresh coat of paint.

Area rugs are a renter’s best friend. Adding stylish rugs around your home is one of the best ways to cozy up your rental and luckily, they can be incorporated anywhere! Larger area rugs can be especially useful if you’re working with dated flooring or even carpet.
Get Creative With Art.
As a renter, hanging art on a wall (that’s not technically yours) can be quite intimidating. We suggest using minimally damaging hangers like command strips or propping art on shelves, bookcases, console tables, etc. It’s also important to keep in mind that filling a small nail hole is only a tiny feat when it comes to cultivating a space that brings you joy... just be selective and let your creativity shine!
